For hundreds of years, the twin kingdoms of Azria and Canai have co-existed peacefully. Citizens of the two societies live side by side, and the economy of each kingdom depends on the other. The kingdoms are ruled by a joint royal dynasty, with a king from Azria marrying a queen from Canai. The system worked perfectly and ensured peace, until now.
The last king of Azria, Mad John, officially declared that his heir would be his favourite hunting dog, Butcher. A king's power is absolute in Azria, and so it came to pass that King Butcher I, a dog, was crowned the official ruler.
Unfortunately for Princess Sofia of Canai, now Queen Sofia, the rigid laws of Canai didn't account for something like this. A hundred royal scholars have looked over the law, but the answer is clear.
"The King of Azria shall bed the Queen of Canai, and shall bring forth his royal seed for as long as he shall desire. The royal breeding must occur in full view of the royal court, and shall continue until the queen's royal flower be filled."
This is how Queen Sofia ended up sitting on a luxurious silken bedsheet, stroking a large and excited bullmastiff in the full view of tens of people. "King Butcher", the bullmastiff, sits on the bed next to Sofia, his tongue wagging happily. Sofia continues to stroke the dog, and sighs. She knows what must be done.
