It stuck out like a sore thumb on the organized shelves of the recently renovated, brightly lit ultramodern campus library. Next to the plastic-wrapped latest editions of sociology journals, was a leather-bound tome that looked older than God. Something about the musty thing called to Sarah. She set aside the bundle of assigned reading she was carrying and began flipping through the pages. Whatever language it was written in was gibberish and the margins were decorated with freaky, disgusting anatomy sketches of people who looked like they'd been turned inside out. "Ew." Sarah made a sour face, sure that she'd had enough and was about to put the thing back where she'd found it, but some urge had her stuff it into her bookbag instead. It was so weird she might as well show it off to her friends and they could laugh at it.
"We could use it for a seance!" Anna said.
"What, like playing with a ouija board and talking to ghosts?"
"Yeah, come on, it'll be fun," the other girl replied.
Neither of them having any real investment in the occult, thinking it was just a silly thing to do after a few drinks in their dorm room, the two of them arranged a circle of candles, dimmed the lights and giggled as they leafed through the grimoire. Sarah stopped at a random passage and began to sound out the the mumbo jumbo that vaguely resembled Latin, trying to put some of her old drama club kid spin onto it seem as authoritative as possible. Anna laughed, but the candle flames began fluttering for seemingly no reason and a chill started creeping into the air. Sarah was spooked, but she couldn't stop herself from reading. Eyes and lips moving on their own, still not understanding the syllables but compelled to railroad from one cryptic character to the next, a shudder ran down her spine. Thunder cracked, despite no sign of rain at all.
The pages began to glow purple. Wide-eyed Anna insisted the joke was over, begging her friend to stop as the incantation built to a fever pitch. Sarah was yelling as she neared the bottom of the page, her hair billowing with a wind that came from nowhere. A beam of energy leapt from the book, ensnaring Anna. Struggling, terror on her face, she was reeled in towards the book, her body vanishing as the cone of light pulled back into the pages. Sarah's spellbound stupor broke as she tried to hold onto her friend, her hands phasing through the girl like thin air as there was less and less of her and then nothing as the book slammed itself shut.
Paralyzed with disbelief, Sarah's eyes fluttered back and forth from the book to her phone, her mind wracked with trying to explain to the police that a magic book ate her friend when she began to feel a strange warmth in her chest. Not a particularly developed girl, especially in contrast to the beautiful Anna, Sarah could only watch, awestruck, as her shape began to change before her eyes, new tissue pressing into the confines of her bra as her bust began to swell rounder, and fuller with every passing moment. The sensation swept lower, her hips broadening and thighs thickening as new mass emerged and weight redistributed. Inspecting herself in a mirror, she confirmed visually what she already felt: her behind had plumped out into a pleasant heart shape.
The contrast of suddenly having curves worth dreaming of moments after Anna had been swallowed up struck her, heart thumping in her changed chest. An observation made her blood run cold. Her body hadn't changed arbitrarily. Looking at herself closely, her new assets looked like what might come out if she had added Anna's measurements to her own. Though pale-faced in the mirror, there was something irresistible about the sight of her new figure, something she'd always been envious of. Fear washing away from her expression, her lips curled as she appreciated what she had become, kneading and groping at new breastflesh. Her mind reeled at the implications. The university was full of gorgeous girls with heavy chests and model's figures. All the beauty she ever wanted could be hers, if she could convince them to join her for a study session, stomach the process, and manage to explain the series of missing girls.
