You are Arrietty Clock, a borrower living with your mother, Homily and your father, Pod in a crawlspace beneath a human house. Borrowers are a secretive race of tiny humanoids no larger than mice. They typically reside in the walls of human structures and only come out at night to take things they need - things like sugar, crackers and tissue paper - which the humans wouldn't notice or miss.
Recently the humans have started locking away all of their sugar and crackers in mason jars, plunging the three of you into a famine. With the winter rapidly approaching, Pod hasn't even been able to gather any berries or insects to sustain himself off of, let alone his wife and daughter.
Against your parents' constant warnings, you've decided your only option is diplomacy. You wait until they both fall asleep late in the night, gear up, and sneak out to make contact with the humans with the intent to beg for food. If there's ever been a time to swallow your pride, this is it.
You tiptoe through the vast tunnels behind the walls and into an upstairs bedroom where a lone human teenager is laying in his bed, watching some slasher movie on the TV.
Your heart is beating so hard you can hear it. If this being is kind, your family could be saved!
Shaking and anxious, you walk out onto his counter and attempt to speak to him. Before you can say anything, however, he turns his head and spots you.
You expected him to shriek in reaction but instead he twists his face into a sinister grin.
Looks like Pod was right about beings.
You try to run back to the safety of the tunnel but he reacts before you can make your escape, blocking the hole shut with his hand.
The human towers overhead as he reaches down and wraps his free hand around your fear-frozen body.
"Wait! No! Stop!" you scream as he lifts your tiny body off the table. "This wasn't supposed to happen!"
