The first thing you remember is the sensation of falling, before you hit the ground hard.
Startled awake by the sudden drop, you snap your head up to take in your surroundings. You're sprawled out on the ground, wearing nothing but underwear judging from the feel of the cold and clammy tiles against your bare skin. You seem to be in a mall—or what was a mall, a long time ago. The storefronts lie abandoned, the walls are damaged and dirty, and the floor is cracked and broken. Debris and shards of broken glass litter the ground, and a thick layer of grime covers everything. Most bizarre of all though, is the electronics.
The entire building seems to have been haphazardly repurposed at some time, with strange, alien machinery crammed into every nook and cranny. Cables drape low from the ceiling, and snake their way across the ground. Stranger still, this machinery seems to have been jury-rigged using whatever was on hand: Radios, televisions, appliances, and even children's toys are wired into these eerie devices. The result is an eclectic web of futuristic technology and scavenged parts entangled throughout the very building itself.
It's at this point you look down at your hands, and notice the plugs—small, round metallic devices protruding from your skin. A quick inspection of your body reveals more of them, driven into your arms, shoulders, chest and thighs. Above you, you spot motionless human bodies hanging from a rack, strung up like livestock in a slaughterhouse. They're suspended by cables connected to the same points on their bodies as the plugs on your own. Until a few moments ago, you must been hanging alongside them.
You're startled as the strange devices around you power on, turning the eerily silent mall into a cacophony of flashing lights and electronic bells and whistles. Klaxons sound as the metal grates covering abandoned storefronts roll open. The shambling figures within lurch forwards, ambling from their darkened rooms out into the neon lighting.
