I am an ordinary student of about 18 years old, named Michael, who lives on the outskirts of some big city, the name is not important. I study and work, and usually I have little free time, but sometimes I have a chance to indulge myself, for example, with computer games.
And so, recently, I installed a program Wallpaper Engine, which allows you to put animated wallpaper on your computer. The choice is wide, it can be nature, some noisy city or, at the least, anime girls. I decided to choose the last one: it was a wallpaper with a black and red background, where on a small tree decorated with Japanese traditional paper lanterns sit two young girls dressed in beautiful holiday clothes (the wallpaper itself was in honor of the New Year holiday). One girl was tall, with brown hair and ponytail, red eyes, glasses, and wearing a tight black dress. She also wore black stockings and black gloves, as well as a pair of black shoes on her feet. Her head was adorned with a gold flower hairpin, and she was holding a black traditional fan.
To her right sat a second girl, but with a shorter stature. She had white short hair with two cute buns on the sides and red bows, and she was wearing a short tight red dress. On top of that, she was wearing white stockings, white gloves and red shoes, and in her hand she was holding a "zaryobo", a japanese dish, which is a wooden dumpling bucket.
The description, of course, is very detailed, but I wanted to convey their beauty because this was my favorite animated wallpaper. I've had this wallpaper for three weeks, and I used to admire it when I was waiting for files to be transferred to a flash drive, for example. But one night, everything changed.
When I got home and turned on my computer as usual, I went to make tea while it started up. As I came back to the table with a mug of tea, I heard one of them, tall and with cinnamon hair, speak right out of the monitor.
"Hello, handsome." she greeted in a seductive voice and fluttered her eyes. "Did we wake up a little late, did we?"
I almost fell out of my chair in surprise, looking around for a camera somewhere in the room. My mouth fell open and closed again, like the one of a fish, not knowing what to say in the end. "Uh... Hello? You're seeing me and hearing me?" I asked without a microphone, saying straight into the monitor.
She smiled and took a few steps away from me before saying, "Oh yes, I heard it perfectly. Your computer is new, and the mic is great. So, who are you, honey?"
"Who am I? Um... Who the hell are YOU?!" I couldn't hold back the exclamation. After all, she spoke as if I had a microphone on! And a webcam, of course! And if that were true, then was the white haired girl also alive?
"Calm down, boy, I'm not going to bite you," she said, bringing a finger to her lips in thought. "My name is Rika. What's yours, boy?"
"Mi... Micheal" I squeezed the answer from myself, unable to tear myself away from such an incredible scene. I felt the urge to touch the monitor and, for some reason, squeeze my finger into it to make sure it wasn't a dream. I haven't had time yet to appreciate the fact that a person appeared to me in a wallpaper, when a quiet, squeaking voice caught my attention:
"Rika-ne-sama! Don't do that!" The short haired girl turned sharply towards her companion, apparently expecting to notice that Riko was again starting an inappropriate story, which would put her, Ayako, to shame, again.
I just sat still in my chair, trying to understand the whole situation. "But you both were just a GIF..." I muttered, referring to the movement in the animation.
Rika shrugged her shoulders and put her hands together, covering the cleavage of her chest a little. "This is not for children!" She joked, laughing a little. "The truth is... me and Ayako are sentient. We have intelligence and self-awareness!"
"W... W-What?!" I exclaimed. "Wow. Wait... That can't be!" I shook my head in disbelief. "Looks like I overworked and now hallucinating from sleep deprivation." I concluded, grabbing my tea cup and sipping a little.
