Life is hard, in the growing settlement of NERV city. The luxuries of the pre-Impact world are a fleeting memory. Supplies are scarce, and everyone works hard to ensure the survival of all. Still, the mood is hopeful. You’ve all survived the end of the world, after all.
Every Sunday morning, Asuka holds a prayer service by candlelight, in the old NERV conference room. More of the survivors join her each week, whether from genuine faith or just to spend a quiet moment in the company of others. You’re not sure what you believe, but you attend every week, along with your young ${Do you and Asuka have a son, or a daughter?}, ${What is your child’s name?}. For whatever reason, her words bring hope to both of you.
She’s here now, standing at a makeshift lectern, holding her most prized possession: a faded old paperback Bible. She begins to read:
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Asuka closes the book, and smiles. “The call to Evangelism. From the Greek, Evangelion, meaning gospel. It’s what we called our great mechanical weapons, in the war against the Angels. In a real sense, that marked the end of our age. But I have faith that Christ is with us, still. Let us pray, as He taught us.”
She starts to lead her ragged congregation in the Lord’s Prayer. You and ${What is your child’s name?} bow your heads, and join in.
